Air Cooling vs Liquid Cooling for Data Centers: What to Review Before Choosing

Short Answer

Air cooling should be reviewed first when densities are within the room or row design envelope. Liquid cooling may be required for very high rack densities, but the project must also define coolant architecture, CDU or secondary loop ownership, facility water and maintenance boundaries.

Where the Choice Changes

  • Expected kW per rack and IT load profile
  • Direct-to-chip, cold plate or rear-door heat exchanger requirements
  • CDU and secondary loop ownership
  • Facility water or coolant supply conditions
  • Redundancy and maintenance requirements
  • Integration with precision cooling or in-row cooling

VERHI Evidence and Boundary

VERHI currently publishes precision air conditioning and in-row cooling product evidence. VERHI does not claim support for every liquid cooling architecture. Liquid cooling should be reviewed as an engineering guide until product and project scope are confirmed.

Common Follow-Up Questions

Does VERHI support liquid cooling?

VERHI does not currently claim support for every liquid cooling type. Submit your rack density and proposed cooling chain for engineering review.

Can air cooling handle AI racks?

Not every AI rack. VERHI should review kW per rack, server configuration and the complete cooling chain before selecting air or liquid cooling.

Next step: Request a liquid cooling engineering review with your rack density and proposed cooling chain. Contact VERHI with the project requirements.
