Modular Data Center Design: What the Design Package Should Include
A modular data center design should start with the operating requirements: IT load, availability target, power and cooling architecture, site conditions, and expansion plan. Module selection happens after these requirements are defined because the same module can be configured with different UPS, cooling, and monitoring systems.
Define the Design Basis
- Design IT load in kW and the expected load profile.
- Required UPS runtime and generator or utility strategy.
- Cooling capacity, airflow, and ambient temperature range.
- Availability target and redundancy philosophy.
- Space, weight, transport, and site access constraints.
- Future expansion capacity and phasing.
Design Power Distribution
The design should show the path from utility or generator input to each rack or IT load. Include transformer and switchgear requirements, UPS capacity and redundancy, battery strings, distribution panels, breakers, and the load schedule used for sizing.
Modular UPS systems can be easier to expand, but the design must confirm battery cabinet space, ventilation, floor loading, and generator compatibility. The power design should also state how loads are shed or transferred during an outage.
Design Cooling and Airflow
Cooling design starts with the heat load and the airflow path. The designer should specify cooling capacity, supply air temperature, return air conditions, airflow per rack or enclosure, and the behavior if one cooling unit is out of service.
For high-density or enclosed layouts, confirm that cold air can reach the equipment intakes and hot air can return to the cooling system without excessive mixing. The design package should include the assumed rack layout and any containment or blanking strategy.
Include Monitoring and Controls
Monitoring should cover power status, UPS and battery alarms, temperature, humidity, cooling alarms, access control, and communication health. The control philosophy should describe normal operation, alarm response, remote monitoring, and maintenance procedures.
For an unattended or remote site, monitoring becomes part of the availability design. Alarm management, notification rules, and service response times should be defined before commissioning.
Add Testing and Commissioning Requirements
The design package should include factory and site test criteria: power continuity, cooling performance, UPS and battery runtime, alarm verification, controls integration, and final acceptance conditions. Testing records give the owner evidence that the installed system matches the design basis.
