An online double conversion UPS continuously converts incoming AC power to DC and then back to regulated AC power for the load. The load is supplied by the inverter at all times, so the UPS can correct voltage and frequency disturbances without waiting for a transfer event. This makes online double conversion a common choice for data centers and other critical loads.

How Double Conversion Works

In normal operation, the rectifier converts utility AC power to DC. The DC power charges the battery and supplies the inverter, which converts the DC power back to regulated AC for the load. This continuous conversion isolates the load from many input power disturbances.

If the utility input fails, the battery supplies DC power to the inverter without a mechanical transfer. The load continues to receive AC power from the inverter until the battery reaches its low-voltage limit or another power source takes over.

Protection and Output Quality

Because the inverter is always online, the UPS can regulate output voltage and frequency and filter many transients from the utility supply. It also provides a clean transition to battery power for input failures.

The level of protection depends on the complete UPS system, including input protection, battery condition, maintenance bypass, distribution, and downstream wiring. A UPS cannot protect against faults on the output side or failures in the load itself.

Efficiency and Operating Mode

Double conversion has an efficiency cost because power is converted twice. The actual efficiency depends on load, topology, input voltage, and operating mode. Some UPS systems include a high-efficiency mode that can reduce losses, but the facility should verify protection behavior before enabling it.

Availability and efficiency should be balanced. A data center may accept the efficiency tradeoff of online double conversion because the load is continuously protected from input disturbances.

When to Use Online Double Conversion

  • The critical load cannot tolerate voltage or frequency disturbances from the utility.
  • The facility requires seamless transfer to battery during an input failure.
  • The power architecture needs a stable output for servers, storage, and network equipment.
  • The site has uncertain utility quality or generator compatibility concerns.

What to Include in a UPS Specification

  • Load in kW and kVA, including the power factor.
  • Required runtime at the design load.
  • Input voltage range and generator compatibility.
  • Output voltage and frequency regulation.
  • Battery type, charging, and replacement requirements.
  • Maintenance bypass and monitoring interfaces.

Часто задаваемые вопросы

What is online double conversion UPS?

It is a UPS that continuously converts AC input to DC and then back to AC for the load, so the load is always powered by the inverter.

Why use double conversion instead of line-interactive UPS?

Double conversion provides continuous voltage and frequency regulation and seamless battery transfer. Line-interactive UPS may be acceptable for less critical loads with a wider disturbance tolerance.

Is online double conversion less efficient?

It can have higher losses than modes that bypass the inverter, but efficiency depends on load and operating mode. Critical data centers may choose it for protection and output quality.
