Why Cabinet Layout Matters More Than You Think #

You've sized the IT load, picked the UPS, and chosen the cooling. But if the HI2000 structural configuration is wrong, you'll fight airflow, cable management, and service access for years. I've seen it happen too often: a perfectly good micro-module becomes a maintenance nightmare because someone didn't think through where the PDU goes or how deep the cabinet is. This guide walks through the practical decisions, so you can avoid those headaches.

Engineer reviewing HI2000 cabinet layout blueprint before installation

Start with the Physical Footprint: Dimensions and Clearances #

The HI2000 is designed as a self-contained micro-module, but it still needs room to breathe. Standard cabinets are 600 mm wide and 1200 mm deep, but you can get deeper options if your servers are long. Before anything else, measure your space. You need at least 800 mm of clearance in front and back for door swing and service access. Side clearance matters too, especially if you're installing cable troughs or busways.

Don't forget floor loading. A fully loaded cabinet can exceed 800 kg, so check the raised floor's load rating. If you're on a slab, that's less of an issue, but still verify. And if you're placing multiple HI2000 units side by side, leave a gap between them—at least 50 mm—so panels can be removed without scratching neighboring cabinets.

Component Placement: What Goes Where and Why #

The HI2000's structural configuration isn't just about racking servers. You're placing power distribution, cooling, and monitoring components in the same footprint. The logic is simple: keep heavy items low, hot items separate from cold aisles, and serviceable components reachable.

Power Distribution Units (PDUs) #

PDUs should be mounted vertically in the rear of the cabinet, ideally on both sides if you have redundant feeds. This keeps power cables short and out of the way of airflow. If you're using a busway system, plan the tap-off positions before you install—retrofitting later is a pain.

Cooling Coils and Fans #

In-row cooling units sit between cabinets or at the end of a row. For the HI2000, the cooling coil is often integrated into the cabinet frame, but if you're using a separate unit, make sure it's on the same side as the hot aisle. That way, exhaust air is pulled directly into the coil, improving efficiency and keeping the cold aisle truly cold.

Monitoring and Control Panels #

Put the monitoring display at eye level—about 1.5 m from the floor. That sounds obvious, but I've seen panels mounted at shin height. Also, leave enough slack on the sensor cables so you can pull the panel out for servicing without disconnecting everything.

КомпонентRecommended PositionReason
PDU (vertical)Rear, left and rightShort cable runs, balanced load
Cooling coilBottom or top, near hot aisleEfficient heat capture
Monitoring panelFront, eye levelEasy access and visibility
Batteries (UPS)Bottom of cabinetLow center of gravity, stable

Airflow Management: Hot and Cold Aisles #

The HI2000 supports both hot aisle containment and cold aisle containment, but you have to pick one and stick with it. For most small deployments, cold aisle containment is simpler—you seal the front of the row, and the cooling unit pushes air into the enclosed space. The hot air returns to the unit through the rear. The key is to avoid mixing: if hot air leaks into the cold aisle, your cooling efficiency drops and you might see hotspots.

Check your blanking panels. Every empty U in the rack needs a blanking panel. It's a cheap fix, but it's the most common omission I see. Without them, hot air recirculates through the rack, and your inlet temperatures rise 5-10°C. That directly affects PUE and equipment lifespan.

Cable Management: Power vs. Data #

Separate power and data cables from the start. Run power cables on one side of the cabinet and data cables on the other. This isn't just about signal interference—it's about serviceability. When you need to trace a cable, you don't want to untangle a rat's nest of Cat6 and power cords.

Use vertical cable managers with finger ducts. They're cheap and they keep cables organized. Also, leave service loops at both ends of each cable. You'll thank yourself when you need to move a server or replace a switch.

Redundancy and Load Balancing in the Cabinet #

If your HI2000 is configured for 2N redundancy, you need to physically separate the redundant paths. That means A-side PDUs on one side, B-side on the other, and separate cable trays. It also means you should distribute IT loads across both feeds—not just for uptime, but for thermal balance. If one side is loaded at 80% and the other at 20%, you'll have uneven heat distribution and cooling issues.

A practical tip: label every power whip and data cable with its source and destination. Use color-coded labels for A and B feeds. It takes an hour upfront but saves days during troubleshooting.

Common Configuration Mistakes to Avoid #

  • Mounting the UPS battery at the top of the cabinet, which raises the center of gravity and makes servicing dangerous.
  • Placing the cooling unit too far from the heat load, so hot air bypasses the coil.
  • Forgetting to install blanking panels, leading to hot spots and wasted cooling.
  • Running power and data cables in the same vertical manager, making future changes messy.
  • Skipping the floor load calculation, only to find the raised floor can't handle the weight.

These are all easy to avoid if you plan the layout on paper first. Draw a simple diagram of the cabinet, mark where each component goes, and share it with your installation team. That diagram is your best defense against guesswork.

Checklist for Your HI2000 Structural Configuration #

  1. Measure the space and verify clearances (front, back, sides).
  2. Check floor loading capacity and leveling.
  3. Decide on hot or cold aisle containment and stick to it.
  4. Mount PDUs vertically in the rear, one per feed.
  5. Place cooling coil near the hot aisle for efficient heat capture.
  6. Install blanking panels in every unused U.
  7. Separate power and data cables into different managers.
  8. Label all cables with source and destination.
  9. Verify that redundant feeds are physically separated.
  10. Test airflow with a thermal camera before loading the racks.

Часто задаваемые вопросы #

What is the minimum clearance required around an HI2000 cabinet?

You should have at least 800 mm in front and back for door swing and service access. Side clearance depends on cable troughs, but 50 mm between cabinets is the bare minimum.

Can I place the UPS battery at the top of the cabinet?

Technically yes, but it's not recommended. Batteries are heavy, and mounting them high raises the center of gravity, making the cabinet unstable and harder to service. Always place them at the bottom.

How do I prevent hot spots in my HI2000 micro-module?

Use blanking panels in every empty U, maintain proper airflow separation between hot and cold aisles, and ensure the cooling unit is sized correctly for your load. Regular thermal imaging checks help catch issues early.

What is the best way to manage cables in an HI2000 cabinet?

Run power cables on one side and data cables on the other, using vertical cable managers with finger ducts. Label everything clearly, and leave service loops for future changes.

Does VERHI provide custom structural configurations for the HI2000?

Yes, VERHI offers tailored solutions based on your specific requirements. We can help you design the optimal cabinet layout, component placement, and redundancy scheme for your deployment.
